I wonder if this is even possible I mean other than massive emails, IM's and phone conversations how do you really know when they are just pulling your chain or not? Is there really a way to verify certain skills?

No, you never know for sure if you're going to be scammed or not.

Make sure you're using an escrow service for payment when dealing with unknown persons or companies..

You could ask them to take an IQ test designed for that particular subject or hire a private detective to follow them around. Honestly though I just try to go with my gut instinct. It is usually right.

Knowing my luck I could flunk out the test at the same rate (I hate taking any type of test), but lately there are a ton pf private policies that people want up front and NDA's it seems like we are turning more and more into a world of the unknown. Kind of makes it hard to shop around sometimes.

Oh I came up with another idea after reading cavei/devlish kirby's post. Consult a mind reader, a really good one, like all the famous people use!

I doubt that is going to happen, with my luck I would end up with a scammer reader instead and then its just money down the drain. I wish sometimes things were like they were almost eons ago, when people gave their word they actually meant it.

If it isn't a subject that carries a qualification, then you should try to go with recommendations from other people who have used the person's talents. I find word of mouth a great recommendation.
