Default 301 Question

Hi,

I have a page on a site in this format www.example.com/widgets.htm which is
301 redirected to www.example.com/copper-widgets.htm .

Google has both in the index, does it now see two seperate pages with
identical content ? (widgets.htm no longer exists)

If so, will Google penalise for identical content ?

Google will have to decide which one to rank higher. That's it.

You won't likely incur a penalty for having one page redirected. Try
doing this 1000 times and surely you will probably be in troubled
waters. Even in the most innocent of circumstances, this type of web
page salvaging could be detected as an attempt at cloaking.

Personally, I am adamantly opposed to redirects of this nature. If a
page no longer of use to the visitor it should be removed from the
server. Google may try to find it a few times but will sooner than
later realize that it no longer exists and eliminate it from the
search results.

regards,
Fred

Google never penalizes for dupe content, though it may well only list one
version.

On this case, if the 301 works, it doesn't matter, as both entries will take
the visitor to the same page.

If the 301 is recent, that would explain both being listed; in time, the
'old one' will fall out.

If it's not recent, then check the 301.

But chances are, nothing to worry about at all.

Fred's quite right; duplication is the very *least* of your worries.

Read Google's webmaster guidelines ASAP
