Default [PHP-WINDOWS] sessions on nt php4.0.0

i think even in php4 sessions you still have to call session_start before
any output is done... but i'll share my php4/sessions experience with win32
here...

php4/win32 is a terrible package. i'm new to php, but i've spent the last
2 weeks working with it nonstop and i've put together some really neat stuff
very fast...

since i'm new, i don't know what php3.0 was like... but it seems like
there was alot of win32 support from the devlopers in 3.0 that is no more in
4.0 - unless it took awhile for the 3.0 dll's and functionality to appear
for win32... i'm not sure but it just seems like the 4.0 developers dont
care about win32.

in 4.0rc2 and 4.0.0 i have no globals in my code. anywhere. i can't
access any standard variables ($HTTP_HOST) - a loop to print out everything
in $GLOBALS prints out nothing... sessions dont work... session_start
crashes in IIS (i saw someone post a similar problem in the bug report
system), it doesn't even come with mssql.dll - quite important to many win32
users... it can't read the php.ini or use it right because even though i
specify paths to extensions there i had to put full pathnames as well - and
there are no errors printed when it can't load an extension at runtime i
guess... oh and i had some *very* strange problem with using a redirect
after a post to my login form and sessions and database access under iis...
it's really hard to explain because i'm not even sure what was causing it in
my code exactly but getting away from the isapi version fixed that... (the
isapi problems might be fixed in 4.0.0, i havn't tried it - i know my
globals problem still exists in 4.0.0 though, which makes it quite useless
since i can't even tell the users IP)

now php3.0.16 on win32 - it's nice : ) after swapping between php4 and
php3, iis isapi & iis exe, and apache this is what i've got running now -
and it has no problems (...so far )

apache 1.3.12 for win32
php 3.0.16 for win32, php.exe as cgi in /apache/cgi-bin dir

for sessions...

i found a snippet on some web site to emulate php4 sessions under php3...
by Danny.Heijl@cevi.be ... it only supports cookies but i've modified mine
to pass the session info in the url as well. works like a champ, and it's
not built around mysql like phplib...

i was very surprised to see php4 released the other day.

but - like i said, i dont know if php3.0 had all of the win32 support it
does in 3.0.16 when it was released, maybe the release of 4.0 will cause
some more work to be done...

sorry to flame about all this stuff but this is part of the reason i got
on the list - to see if any other win32 php4 users have the problems i've
had... and maybe there are some ways to get it fixed...
