Default Format HTML out-put

Hello,

I am stuck, I want to format the out put in the first row and column in to
bold, but cannot work out how, any ideas?
The script in full is below:

<html>
<head>
<basefont face="Arial">
</head>

<body>

<center>Times Tables.</center>
<br>
<p align="center">
<table border=1>
<?

// the purpose of this exercise is
// to generate a 12x12 grid via an html table

// this is accomplished via two nested "for" loops

// the first one is for the table rows or <tr>s
// we need twelve of them

for ($alpha=1; $alpha<=12; $alpha++)
{
?>
<tr>

<?
// the second one is for the cells in each row or <td>s
// we need twelve of them too

for ($beta=1; $beta<=12; $beta++)
{
?>
<td align="right">
<?
// print the number of each cell

{
echo ($beta*$alpha) . "<br>";
}

?>

</td>

<?
}
?>

</tr>

<?
}
?>

</table>
</p>
</body>
</html>

Replace this line:

> echo ($beta*$alpha) . "<br>";

with these lines:

if (($alpha == 1) or ($beta == 1)) {
echo '<b>', ($beta*$alpha), '</b><br>';
} else {
echo ($beta*$alpha), '<br>';
}

Cheers,
NC

One could make the code run a bit faster by skipping the if's in every
loop (not a big deal for 12 rows, but...):

echo '<td align="right"><b>' . $alpha . '</b></td><br>';
for ($beta=2; $beta<=12; $beta++)
{
?>
<td align="right">
<?
// print the number of each cell

{
echo ($beta*$alpha) . "<br>"; }?>

You should also consider using <th> instead of <td> in the first row
if that first row is really a header (html is all about content, not
formating; use css for formating.)

Happy coding.
E.
