| Hello Everyone, I just purchased a new server and am thinking about putting it at a datacentre and offering hosting on it. While I'm sure I'm not going to do the "Hosting as low a $1!" thing I want to know what everyone thinks about this offering/price scheme: - 150 MB Space - 2 GB Bandwidth - PHP, Perl, ASP, and ColdFusion MX Scripting - Unliminted MySQL or PostgreSQL databases - Unlimited POP3 accounts - Unlimited email aliases - Unlimited mailing lists - We run our own SMTP server (PostFix) - Full access to cron jobs (within reason) - 24/7 Tech Support (Phone and Email) - Domain name hosting - OC3 Connection to the Internet - Full redundancy - Network Virus Filtering For this I am thinking about charging $8.95 per month. What does everyone think? Any suggestions? Thanks! Anthony | |||

I suggest offering an unlimited number of real email addresses (each having a separate inbox), with limited space (20MB) for each address. JB.

Should I even bother to offer email aliases for those who know what they are and who want to use them? Maybe make it a "by request only" type thing. Or are they not even worth that? Anthony

The only situation I would use an alias is this one: let's say I'm the president of an association, and I'm also the responsible for the website of the association, but would like someone else to become the webmaster later. In this case, I would create an address "president@myassoc.com" and an alias "webmaster@myassoc.com" pointing to "president@myassoc.com", in order to get all the emails at once in a single inbox. Later, when a new webmaster is found, I would delete the alias "webmaster@myassoc.com", and create a new real address "webmaster@myassoc.com", that the new webmaster would use. So yes, I would only mention that aliases are possible, but activate and deactivate them on demand, in order not to confuse the users. JB. > Anthony > >

I use them to track spams and who sells my info where.

I like the way my ISP handles that: I have a limited amount of pop accounts I can configure. One is defined as the main account; every mail that comes in with an address that does not correspond with a configured account goes into that main account. Which gives me an unlimited number of possible addresses to do whatever I want to without any configuring. That means I can use addresses as info@mydomain.com, webmaster@mydomain.com and so on; because there are no pop accounts for them the mails go into the main account. If in some years I should decide to hire a webmaster, I just configure a pop account for webmaster@mydomain.com. -- Markus

Good idea, but remember that you might not always be the president. So I usually give each user his or her own personal account, "fredsmith@myassoc.com", "maryjones@myassoc.com", etc. Then I set up aliases "president@myassoc.com", "treasurer@myassoc.com" and so on, and point the aliases to the real account.
