OK, first of all, why do you have to have blogging software that should work in a way appropriate for a large site? You are NOT trying to start a large site; rather, you want a collection of relatively small sites. Why not develop accordingly? So here's my suggestion: 1. Pick a lightweight, but nice enough personal blog. My favorite is Blog by Jonathan Beckett available from the author at http://www.pluggedout.com/blog/. The package is small (about 50k, including images and GPL license), but functional. 2. Write a fully-automated installation routine for this blog, with automatic creation of directory and database structures, as well as generation of customized configuration file. 3. Let each user have their own blog site relatively independent of other blog sites hosted on the same server. So let's say your blogging community is hosted at www.bc.org (bc, of course, is short for "blogging community"). A new user comes in and wants to set up a blog. The registration script asks the user for a desired login name and password. Let's say the user chose login name 'newblogger' which is available, so the installation program: 1. Creates a new directory, www.bc.org/newblogger. 2. Installs Blog (or another lightweight blogging package) in that directory. Color/stylesheet customization can be done here, too. 3. Creates a new database called 'newblogger' and requisite empty tables in it. Another possibility is to create a group of prefixed (newblogger_*) tables in a pre-existing database designated for that purpose. 4. Sends the user an e-mail confirmation of registration. As a result, you would have a collection of blog sites with each running a separate copy of a lightweight blogging package. Cheers, NC | |||

Just wanted to let you guys know that I'm almost finished developing an automated installation script for the Blog software that this post speaks about and should have it done by the end of the weekend. Right now, I'll be releasing it for Linux only but I will also be working on a Windows version in the near future. If you want a copy, email me and I'll send it to you as soon as it's done. I'll also post it at http://www.safferconsulting.com/blog/bloginstall.rar for those of you who want to get it there. Should be available by late Sunday.
