But are you accessing your web server via the internet or locally, as localhost would suggest? If you have a domain name and you are trying to access it by domain name then it should read http://domainname/assets/document1.doc If you are opening it locally on your web server, then it would read http://localhost/assets/document1.doc

With that out of the way, try this: in "address" bar, type: http://server where server is your server name. Now scroll over the link. What does it say at the bottom of the browser? This assumes that the default page for http://server/ is the page that you created with the "/assets/document1.doc" link on it. Also, consider this: What does it say in the "Address" line for the URL? Does it say "http://localhost/" ? If so, then that is the basename of the URL for the "/assets/document1.doc" link. At a more fundamentaly level, you need to learn how path names, relative path names, URLS, virtual directories, and things like that work with regard to the Web and your Webserver. This is NOT a PHP problem that you are having. -- Jeffrey D. Silverman | jeffrey AT jhu DOT edu Johns Hopkins University | Baltimore, MD Website | http://www.wse.jhu.edu/newtnotes/
