Default more problems with php displaying tables

alright guys, I"m still having trouble with this table creation stuff with
php. A quick overview: Right now Im displyaing my collected data like this:

<?php

$_POST['name']=$name
print "Hello $name";
?>

Which works fine, but I want to be able to format the variables a little
nicer. So I want to put my info into tables. The syntax that some one gave
me dosen't work:

echo "<table>
<tr>
<td>Name</td>
<td>$name</td>
</tr>
</table>";

I found some other code that said I should put an echo or print statement on
each line of the table like so:

echo "<table>";
echo "<tr>";
echo "<td>Name</td>";
echo "<td>$name</td>";
echo "</tr>";
echo "</table>";

This just returns a blank page however. What am I doint wrong? Any help
would be great!

greg g.
