Default help with problem creating session variables

I can start a session, but I cannot register session variables.
example,
session_start(); - this works
session_register("name"); or session_register('name'); this does not work
$name = "paul"; - This just sets a local variable

I know the session is started because there is a cookie for it, but no
cookie for the session variable $name.

Check your version of PHP. You might have to use:

session_start();
$_SESSION['name] = "paul";

(From the manual
<quote>
If you are using $_SESSION and disable register_globals, do not use
session_register(), session_is_registered() and session_unregister(), if
your scripts shall work in PHP 4.2 and earlier. You can use these
functions in 4.3 and later.

Default Re:creating session variables and multiple form

I had the same problem, only on a page with multiple forms ( 1 appearing at
a time).
Someone smarter than arrived at

<?PHP
session_start();
?>

<?php
foreach ($_SESSION as $thislabel => $thisvalue) {
echo $thislabel . " : " . $thisvalue . "<BR>\n";
}
foreach ($_POST as $thislabel => $thisvalue) {
echo $thislabel . " : " . $thisvalue . "<BR>\n";
}

// save values in _SESSION hash variable
foreach ($_POST as $thislabel => $thisvalue) {
if (($thislabel != "PHPSESSID") &&
($thislabel != "form1") &&
($thislabel != "form2") &&
($thislabel != "form3") &&
($thislabel != "form4")) {
$_SESSION[$thislabel] = $thisvalue;
}
}

?>
<?php
if (isset($_POST["form1"])) {
//. Form page
?>
<div align="center"></div>
<form method=POST action="<?echo $PHP_SELF; ?>">
form blah blah
<input type=submit name="form2" value="continue">
</form>

down to
<?php
} elseif (isset($_POST["form4"])) {
// 5. Form Page
?>
<form method=POST action="results.php">
form blah blah
<input type=submit name="all_done" value="continue">
</form>

Bit more than you asked for but hope it helps
