Character-set-results other then utf8 ??

Hi.
I use mysql database on Fedora Core 5 and my native labguage is Polish.
So I want to change character-set-client and character-set-results to
latin2.
I've spent many hours on changing /etc/my.cnf with nothing. I can change
almost all others variables but no those two.

I've tried:

[mysqld]
character-set-results = latin2

- after that mysqld doesn't start at all.

Help.

To be more specific: I can't change session values to match global
values: character-set-client, character-set-results,
character-set-connection.

Anybody? ... help.
