| Hi- I'm a newbie to mysql. I install mysql 4.15 as instructed in BINARY_INSTALL on Red Hat 9.0. Everything seems fine except the root password. I set the root password as in the instructions of mysql after compiling mysqladmin -u root password 'stuff' However I get an error with following.... [root@goku root]# mysqladmin -u root -h localhost password 'stuff' mysqladmin: connect to server at 'localhost' failed error: 'Access denied for user 'root'@'localhost' (using password: NO)' [root@goku root]# mysqladmin -u root -h goku password 'stuff' mysqladmin: connect to server at 'goku' failed error: '#HY000Host 'goku.comcast.net' is not allowed to connect to this MySQL server' I can login into mysql with mysql -p and this what is in mysql db. mysql> use mysql Reading table information for completion of table and column names You can turn off this feature to get a quicker startup with -A Database changed mysql> select host, user from user; +-----------+------+ | host | user | +-----------+------+ | goku | | | goku | root | | localhost | | | localhost | root | +-----------+------+ 4 rows in set (0.03 sec) I set a password for root@localhost or root@goku once I'm in but I still can login as either once I exit mysql. I notice with either login it gives an error and appends localhost to it. e.g root@localhost@localhost. However if I set the password back to blank, I can login in with either w/o a password but no access to mysql or test db. Am I missing something? I don't believe not naming resolve problem because I have the hostname set in /etc/hosts. appreciate any help, Melvin | |||

Yes, but the daemon (server program) mysqld soesn't seem to run! Did you start the mysql server? Do a tail -f /var/log/mysql/mysqld.log in a console and watch what mysqld says. yours Henri > > mysql> use mysql > Reading table information for completion of table and column names > You can turn off this feature to get a quicker startup with -A > > > Database changed > mysql> select host, user from user; > +-----------+------+ > | host | user | > +-----------+------+ > | goku | | > | goku | root | > | localhost | | > | localhost | root | > +-----------+------+ > 4 rows in set (0.03 sec) > > I set a password for root@localhost or root@goku once I'm in but I still > can login as either once I exit mysql.
