display usernames that are logged in

I am looking for a simple way to display Usernames of those logged into a
simple site I have. Data is coming in from mySQL.

Do I need to add a TINYINT to my DB which will switch as they login in and
out, or is there a simpler way to show which users have logged on?

I think use your DB is the simplest one ! You should think that
your users wont always logout and find an alternate way to record
that user has leaved (after fixed ammount of time ?).
