css in Internet Explorer

what are some basic css codes to correct the way IE uses css? i have heard of overflow: hidden;( i think). because i coded a site, and it looks great in firefox, but in IE, the main content is placed below the sidebar and the navagational links are all weird, and only the middle third is viewable. and i dont know how to fix it

Well I'm not sure what the basic code would be. But when I see code I can usually come up with an answer
