I'm sure that it works in all modern browsers, don't know about the older ones. It is better to use css for some images rather than using the html img tag since the user can't select the image (I sometimes accidently drag an image and drop it somewhere in my desktop or bookmarks tab and that bothers me.)

I have been looking into CSS with images and there looks like alot more work is needed to do it, do you think it is worth doing all that work?

Well that would all depend on what you wanted to do, see if your website only has say 4 images then it wouldnt take long but if it has 30 then it could but it could also take just as long other ways, what you have to think the more you do something the quicker you get so you have to pick a way you like and go for it

No, in fact it is easier, you just have to know the height of the image and use it as an element's height and then set its background to the image you want to use. It is more efficient because the image does not interfere with your layout and how other elements are positioned, plus it allows you to write text on top of the image if you wish (rather than having to add the text in photoshop).
