| Hello folks, How are you on this mildly warm winter morn? I was wondering if you folks could help me. I've been trying to break into the marketing field. My last job was as a Marketing Assistant but I was laid off. I also have a BS in marketing. I've been trying to break into and I have been sending out my resumes via email and snail mail. I have been able to get in to the interviews. But alas, that job has not come forth. Would anyone have any tips for a fellow marketer. Cassandra | |||

You need to have an impressive resume of projects you brought to life and then network your friends to recommend you to their contacts. Otherwise you are more likely to land another secretarial job with the title of Marketing Assistant and no chance at all to exercise your creativity. One very good way to move up the ladder is to start in sales, even selling magazine subscriptions door to door, and getting the feel of selling so you can appreciate the tools you will need to master to become a good marketer. I recommend you get hold of Joe Girards' stuff and study it with great concentration and imagination. He is in the Guiness Book of Records as the World's Greatest Salesman. Take his technique and apply it to yourself by loading yourself with business cards and the little note on the back promissing a commission to anybody who helps you make a sale. That sale could be a job or could be an assignmnent as an independent marketing guru. Take a look at my son's website and see if there is anything there you could help him with, then write a proposal, send it to me, this will help you sharpen your communication skills. www.rcsailcars.com Wayne www.pueblaprotocol.com > >

Guess I'm just small potatoes. I'll bet there are lots of other small businesses out there in similar situations, probably lots more small businesses that haven't given a thought to proper marketing. Seems like us little guys are a vast untapped market for you. We'd be lots of small accounts generating small $$$ instead of a few big accounts netting bigger $$$. Just an idea . . . Wouldn't need a big fancy office tower or whatever, just some smarts and good ideas . . . -Tock

Would > anyone have any tips for a fellow marketer. I can give you my own method: start in sales. If you get a sales job then you are really close the customer and learn a lot. You know more about what the customer wants then just about anyone in the company. You will likely work with marketing so will have a chance to talk with the marketing people. Once you have established yourself as a good salesperson, you then start volunteering for marketing related projects. This will be especially appreciated if your company is small and does not have much of a marketing department. A good project to start with might be a competitive analyses. But talk to your sales manager and others to find out what needs to be done. Continue to do projects and either move into marketing at your company or at another company. The key is that you have to be willing to do sales, enjoy, and committ yourself to continually getting better! There is nothing worse than a unenthusiastic salesperson or one that is obviously biding time until they get another job. Oh, and one more thing, keep reading. I realize you have a marketing degree but be sure to keep your marketing knowledge and skills sharp. Learn about your industry too. -- Robert Anderson

| Getting a marketing job is really a question of your resume standing out from the crowd. Think of ways you can distinguish yourself or differentiate yourself from others.Conduct a SWOT analysis on yourself (you really have to know yourself really well). When responding to a job ad, research the company that is hiring. Not only should you articulate your experience with what they are looking for but also add some additional skills/experiences that would bring additional value to the hiring company based on your research. Think of yourself as a bundle of benefits that will position yourself in a unique and valuable manner to the hiing company. Best of Luck.
