| I would like to discuss how does a Internet technological company like Google managed to defeat the other search engines, such as Yahoo, Northernlight, Excite, etc. This is question about how to win in any business competition. If you have the money to start your own search engine business, how could you beat Google, MSN, etc. First of all, how did Google manage to get itself more popular among all other search engines? What are their marketing tactics? Thanks! | |||

Notice that Google started without an IPO, nor did Microsoft, nor did Intel, nor did HP, nor did the Wright Brothers, nor did Edison. They all came from outside the known paradigms. They blindsided the buggy makers, whip makers, IBM mainframes, PC boards, vacuum tube makers and the like. They saw a wrinkle in the technology that the masters in technology - busy waving their wands in the penthouses of senior management and executive boards - could not, nor wanted to see. It follows the great American entrepreneurial bent that has forever pushed this great country, nation and society into the future. Sometimes kicking and screaming, but after a while, we own it and take pride in it. Twenty years ago you could only find one in a hundred senior playing with a computer. Today's it's a wave. I only pray that the same discovery take place with my son's innovative, exciting, fun-filled, UNUSUAL, unknown hobby/sport take off the same way. Wayne www.rcsailcars.com | |||

| Google Started off a while ago owned by couple of college students. They will soon be worth 20 Bil. That's bil with a B. They Did several things right, at the right time: They Invested in smart technology early adoption. (Applied semantics, Cirrca technology I think it was called, the technology that looks for CONCEPTS not just word matches). They refrained from SELLING the rank spots under the table like the other guys. They kept their noses clean. They kept the page clean and uncluttered... (how refreshing). And they stayed FOCUSED. (Try getting a google mailbox...). Some of you may know... The google textbox doubles as a calculator, dictionary, stock checker, phone book, spell checker and a bunch of other neat stuff ~zion~ | |||

| I think how Google got an advantage was through word-of-mouth advertising. In the beginning, people were saying they had the biggest search engine results. As they get more into advertising other search engines may have more objective results as to what web pages are really out there. It's interesting to note that now they may be not be the very thing that gave them advantage. -- ParaMind Brainstorming Software -- We make an easy to use, totally-customizable brainstorming software with a small learning curve. http://www.paramind.net | |||

| Actualy there was very little marketing. It was not marketing that got them where they are today, it was providing a better service, and then word of mouth got them their fame. A useful, reliable product. 2. Publicity--friendly relations with the media. 3. Marketing to business users who, in turn, spread the name via word-of-mouth. 4. Built brand awareness; good branding. ......this is just my professional impression of them...I'm only vaguely familiar with the company and marketing tactics. > This is question about how to win in any business competition. > > If you have the money to start your own search engine business, how > could you beat Google, MSN, etc. Differentiation...I used to search terms on various search engines, and would often gets 3-4 different sets of results, usually based on the timeframe involved (each engine has its own proprietary algorithm of ranking results, usually consisting of hits by the user, sites that have links to the site, and keywords)...one engine may show results over a 2-week timeframe, while another over 2 years. A site that allows the user to specify the timeframe of hits to consider should have an advantage. > First of all, how did Google manage to get itself more popular among > all other search engines? > > What are their marketing tactics? > > Thanks! It seems alot had to do with brand recognition, plus providing meaningful results...plus they've added search results on "news," "images," and now shopping sites "Froogle.com." D | |||
