So the general answer to your question seems to be "it is not very possible". However, a very very small number of groups may tolerate posts that advertise if the posts are kept topical, informative, and short. Since newsgroups are discussion groups, expect scorn to be heaped on hype or inappropriate posts. How many venues do you know where the target audience can dissect, publicly criticise, and ridicule any set-piece marketing materials such that the entire target audience can see the entire exchange? In my humble opinion, I think the best way to market services (or products) in such an environment is to do it indirectly - by contributing to discussions, being helpful, answering questions, and avoiding hype when you do mention your firm's products or services. Posting material that you might place in a magazine or newspaper ad just don't take account of the dynamics of the environment and I think should be avoided. | |||

| Contributing to newsgroup discussions with on topic questions and replies with a signature that includes a link to your business/website (see below) is the safest way to use the newsgroups. As long as you're being an active contributor then a closing tagline or two is perfectly acceptable. Almost every newsgroup FAQ prohibits advertising and you're bound to have spam complaints made against you at some point if you're just advertising, even in groups that are directly related to your business.
