| Member Level 2 | At the time of purchasing a hosting as first you have to choose the platform of the hosting like Windows and Linux. Generally Linux Hosting is far cheaper then Windows. but this is completely dependent on your website development if your site is built using ASP then you have to choose windows server and using PHP then you have to choose Linux server. Many windows server supports Linux also for this you have to read their manual or package includes. | ||

| Member Level 2 | Yeah Linux hosting is definetely better that windows hosting. The only reason I would go for windows hosting is if I needed ASP support.

| MK Moderator ![]() | Why do you have to choose Linux if you're using PHP? I'm using a Windows Server, and PHP works fine... A question though: I understand that if you're under Windows then you can't use mod_rewrite... Is there any Windows alternative? | ||

| MK Moderator ![]() | Thanks. I think an alternative for what I want to do could just be .htaccess, but I'll have to look into it some more. I'm knida confused, as I've surprisingly never needed to use one or another until now. | ||

| MK PitStop Member | You don't need Windows for PHP. You need it for ASP. You will need Unix server for: Ruby on Rails CGI/PERL (I'm not sure if Unix is obligatory here...) Posgres Databases Windows server is needed for: ASP/ASP.NET MS SQL MS ACCESS | ||
