Default Unlimited Bandwidth

We've always stumbled upon web hosts offering unlimited bandwidth. The question is, are they really capable of offering that kind of bandwidth?

IMO, overselling is okay, provided that the web host knows how to handle and control their customers. Almost every company oversells their bandwidth. Even if they allocate a fixed amount of bandwidth to a package, they are probably overselling it too. But if you choose an unlimited bandwidth package, then you're definitely at risk of overselling problems.

What do you think of overselling?

I agree with your point, too. If the company in question knows what they're doing and doesn't oversell too much, I think it's fine.

Also, almost every company does it, which balances it out.

We was having a chat about this in another thread and I said that there isnt any such thing you will find that in the terms on the host that they will say some sort of limit and that they will most probably close your account if you hit a high bandwidth.

i think its okay if there should be a good mind behind, like if u distribute 1 db with 4 clients, if an administrator carefully choose the pool so that each time only 2 clients will get maximum traffic (like if therw is a time differenece between them, so choose 2 with same time zones and two with other) it will hold minor pressure on the line.

Personally, when choosing for a web host, I tend to stay away from the ones using "Unlimited" in their packages. It makes me feel unsafe It's okay, if you offer terabytes of space/bandwidth, but if you offer something which is "Unlimited", it makes you look like a conman

I was thinking about this myself just yesterday, I was going to start up a website where people could upload their files, pictures, small videos etc. I had hosting planned out but seen as though i don't know alot about hosting i asked my friend about it and he said even though the hosting i was looking at was unmetered if the site was to get "too much useage" they would probably cap my account or shut it down.

Yes very true, and more with what idea you have as people would post a link to there image that they have uploaded and this would make you use alot of bandwidth so the host would defently not like it.

"Unlimited Bandwidth" is a marketing scam imo because they really do not offer unlimited bandwidth. It just means there is no publicly stated set limit but be assured that they will close your account and website if you hit a certain number.

If unlimited means "a lot of bandwith" and if you really can use it a lot, there is no problem. Many are atracted with "unlimited", they try and then use it only a little - the seller knows that, so he don't need to have unlimited sources.

Yeah, so bottom line is whenever your hosting provider "feels" that you're using more bandwidth than you're supposed to use, they'll shut it down.
