I do not think that ranking in on SE affects ranking in other SE. Just keep working hard for your site and results will come. But, Yes you have to keep ranking/postioning criterea of major SE in mind and try to figure out a middle path.

If you rank high in one search engine, it doesn't mean the same in another. For example if you find a site #1 in MSN, it is possible that it wont be in first page of Google when u search with same keywords.

search engines try not to show rankings the same as the other top ones, you will find if you are doing everything right then you will rank like this

1. msn
2. yahoo
3. google

thats how you will go up starting with msn till you get to google top ranks, when you do you will find you will drop in the others, but thats where your other pages start to get ranked and so on so all is good, also the pages that you have not done good on the SEO will stay in the lower search engines so this will help all wound for traffic
