Default Destop search input line interface is terrible and a suggestion

I have destktop search Ver 2.01 on xp-pro.
I find myself using it less and less because it returns too many results to
be useful.
What would make this program useful to me (and I suspect many others) would
be a
4 or 5 line interface for searches where you could specify, say

Line 1. An exact phrase in the target file
Line 2. other words in the file
Line 3. words to exclude
Line 4. type of file (say .pdfs only)
Line 5. partial filename or directory(s) where to look

I don't want to have to formulate a query where I need to look up syntax for
this type of stuff.
What's the point of having a great search machine with a crummy one-line
input that is reminiscent of the
command line interface. This is windows, right? Why is the input line
so -non windows-??

Any chance of this or is it available in some version somewhere?

Thanks!
alan
