Gamil address with plus sign

What is the effect of incorporating a plus sign ( + ) in a gmail address
(username+NoSpam@gmail.com). I was under the impression that mail delivered
to username would go directly to a folder named "NoSpam". I would like to
use this when I give out my email address to avoid my Inbox from getting
cluttered but to see who is selling my address or to automatically sort my
email as it arrives.
