yes you can make your money by the derectory but you will have to develop that in JAVA programming language

I know this is kind of old, but the answer will still help some people hopefully.
Directories don't make that much money unless you have a really big one that people trust and keep coming back to and you get people to add new sites daily.

Different ways you can get money:

• Affialietes
• Personal Advertising
• YPN (Yahoo Publishers Network)
• Adsense (Google)
• Text Links

There are many more ways to get money to get money through a website that you own.

Remember, it takes a little bit before you can rake in some money. Don't worry about making money in the begining, but rather worry about building your user base and directory base.
