Benifits of a link directory

Okay can some one please explain the benifits of a link directory, in terms of having one on your website and also being listing in link directory?
Is being listed in more than 1 better or worse?

Listing your site in as many as you can is good, each listing on a different directory is classed as a backlink to your website, this in turn can gain traffic and better rankings within the search engine.

Now for owning one can do different things, like these

= earn a small amount of cash from submissions
= gain traffic to other websites you might own
= earn cash from adverts on the site (adsense)

Depending on how you lay the website out, ay you do it so that every link submitted has its own content page then this can gain alot of pages indexed in google, msn and yahoo etc etc then this in turn makes traffic

So all in all it is worth while me create a dir website and also placing my site's into dir's

well yer, but as with everything times will change. If you can get your dir website on a different ip than the others you might own then you could add links to the websites in all the related categories. this way it will help even more

Must admit that if you have a web directory on your site then you may want to allow free listings untill you get a nice amount of sites into each category, it may be best to stop them free listings then and just go for paid editorial submissions instead.

If you keep it totally free then you will most probably find that you are spending more time on approving listings than what it's worth from the earnings that you get back from the directory.
