Does link exchange really improve ranks?

I have doubts that by doing link exchange will make a website have a better rank. How can it be?

I always do link exchanges with the idea in my mind of getting people from other websites to mine. Does this unique hits i receive from other websites makes my rank higher or there is something else?

A few years ago, link exchanging was great and could help in both rankings and also PR but today they are not that powerful.

Link backs are more powerful if the site that is giving you the link back has a good PR itself. Unfortunately the Google PR system is like a popularity contest, and they view links from high PR sites as being a vote from a really popular site and hence view that you must be good too.

I am doing as many link exchanges I can everyday in hope to get more bots crawling my blog from other websites/blogs.

Maybe it just means, as I said, that the sites you are exchanging with do not have a high enough PR themselves to give you the boost that you need. If the site you are swapping links with only has a 1, you'll only get 1 point and need many, many links to help you. But if you swap with a 5 then you get 5 points for instance (generalising) and so you get a PR increase much faster.

I think it helps as long as your link is not posted in a page with 50 outbound links.

Alright I understand it better now..but it is hard to get someone with a high PR to swap links with my PR2 blog...

Hmm how if I post a comment on a high PR blog with my website link in it as a signature? Will it still be counted as "backlink"?

How is that idea?
