Acquire too many one way links in the shortest time will not help in the search ranking. Google will even put your site under surveillance if it detects that your site has a sudden jump in backlinks.

I agree with templatelite, make your link building efforts steady and consistent. Sudden, rapid link acquisition will possibly red flag you to Google and you could be penalised and de-ranked in the SERPs. You do usually just pop back after a little while, though.
Sadly there really are no short cuts to link building, and quality of links is far more important than quantity. Get links from high PR sites that have similarly themed content to yours.
