Scoot, I would think that is before submitting a site to a web directory. Even after you have submitted your site to a search engine, you can still make changes to enhance your site's SE ranking.

P.S. I feel like I'm saying this because I have submitted my site already to search engines and I wasn't even finished with it! Talk about defense mechanisms.

with search engines the best way to get indexed is by linking, and doing this before the website is finished is even better as the faster your site is indexed in the search engines the better and the more easy it will be to rank it, but getting links to a un finished website can be hard, now to do this you could as your mates or the other one is to add your link to your sig in foirums that you post alot.

remember the more posts the better and even better if the links are related to the posts you do as that will help you also rank better in the search engines
