Link exchange or one way links

What is better link exchange or one way links?

I was told that link exchange was not that good and that one way links are alot better, why would this be the case?

I dont own a website but I am thinking of starting one, I am doing a lot of reading before I even start

One way links are better in lots of ways, I dont know them all but I would say the main thing is that they look better to the search engines

One way links are better, as SEs tend to think that if someone links to your site it's because you have decent content.
I've heard three way links are just as effective though.

I think both are good strategies are good- but be careful with the sites you trade links with; they might be banned or in bad sheets with the S.E.s and than you will be penalize for it. But building a good reciprocal linking campaign with good PR sites, relevant to your niche is always good.

Nevertheless I have to agree that one way linking gives your site credibility and the S.E.s will see you as a useful and reliable resource.

Link exchanging is a cheap way to get better results on a search engine, if you can afford to pay for text advertisements to improve PR.

One way links are given higher importance than reciprocal links by google. Also, if you are going to exchange links with other sites try to do it with sites that are relevant to your content as these links will be more valuable to you.

three way links are good also like GLD says even better if there on different ip's

one way links means a site list your url to it and in response you didnt need to provide the alternative link to them. so its obviously benefits your in any way that you got the link with out doing anything

if you have your own directories then three way is the best option to choose
