What is the benefit of a 5 year old domain?

If it was deregisterd before you bought it I dont think that helps in any good ways and it will not be bad.

If it has been indexed sinse 2003 then that will be good and should be good for ranking easy older domains do rank easyer than new ones.

21 Sep 2003 10:23:58 is "age of Domain" not "age of site".

leave it ....because IN Google's eyes domain age of 3 yrs and 5 yrs has same important.i.e. a link that is 24 months old is just as good as a link that is 48 months old.

and as i mention before too Archive.org as also trustable source. so no worries.... Go Ahead.

Now come to your main question " why old site/domain are important?"

1.Older Sites are Preferable Because they Inherently have More Links.not only due to age but also to quality of content and link building programs.

2.Older Sites Rank Better Because they Offer Better Content [ just guessing]

3.you have to no worries about "aging delay" and "sandbox effect" in old site.

4.Once a certain level age. links ,or some other unknown factor is reached, the site is given a 'pass' that allows it to compete in the SERPs with other old sites.

5.Older Sites has more pageviews and clicks.[ i dont sure if google use this data to rank site but search engine like Alexa use this kind of data.]

Everyone knows that Old is Gold as per Google's Algo. but know one know the reason behind it. this 5 point is what i am thinking only.
