| I'm the guy that purchased Corel Draw 8 on Ebay, I tried to install it, but my Windows XP Home machine immediately comes up with an error message"is not a valid win32 application". The CD is brand new with serial number, but OEM, says "Corel Draw8 for Windows NT/Alpha" I have no idea what I can do. Any help is appreciated. I mean if it doesn't work it doesn't work.......Peter | |||

I mean if it doesn't work it doesn't work.......Peter I was wondering: does the "Windows NT/Alpha" mean that it is optimized for the WIndows NT platform running on a ex-DEC-now-HP Alpha system . . . ? Windows NT on the Aplha platform (as opposed to the Intel-processor Platform) was discontinued (); effective with the first shipments of Windows 2000. WinNT4-SP6 was the last update I believe, but I hadn't thought there would be any difference between the Intel or the Alpha versions of the software. Except that there was some sort of translation-engine ('FX!32' ?) that enabled 32-bit software to run on the 64-bit Alpha. Dunno, my friend--I've been an Intel-junky all these years after a successful completion of the Atari 12-step program ;-) Have an ask over at the Corel Newsgroup server: cnews.corel.com/corel.graphic_apps.draw-old_version . . . should be someone over there who would know the difference. -- ah

Pretty sure this is what the OP has: The binary is for the Dec alpha chip [which offered NT] and is not compatible with Intel. Should be able to verify by simply poking around the install directories and using "properties" on the file, or better yet, freeware FileAlyzer. Corel In NT Pact With Alpha Systems Vendor June 17, 1998 (7:50 p.m. EST) By Andy Patrizio, TechWeb News Corel said Tuesday it has signed an agreement to bundle 64-bit versions of several flagship products with workstations made by Alpha Processing, a Samsung Electronics subsidiary. Under terms of the agreement, Corel, based in Ottawa, Canada will include Alpha versions of CorelDraw 8 and Word Perfect Office 8 for Windows NT. The deal also covers bundling the Intel versions of Corel software with Samsung's PCs, monitors, and printers.

| A good analogy would be that you are trying to put diesel in a non-diesel engine. Or more appropriate, you are trying to put a 120 volt lightbulb in a 12 volt system. Long ago, one of Microsoft's thoughts on how to get into bigger corporate datacenters was to get their operating systems running on the big commercial chips rather than the little [at the time] Intel PC chips. The "Alpha" chip has nothing in common with the normal Intel used in a PC. The bits and bytes on your CD are for that chip. Before you toss it, open the directories and see if you see any labelled "386". If there is a setup.exe in any of those, you might be able to install it. Personally, Corel 9 is better as was 7, and also 11. PeterM wrote: > Hey guys unfortunately this is all over my head. | That is good news, so I can buy an upgrade, like 9 or 10 maybe even 11, and hopefully it doesn't look for an earlier version. The last full version in my name is Version 5.........Peter "Lon Stowell" <lon.stowell@comcast.net> wrote in message news:3F047A9D.50107@comcast.net... > On the corel I've installed as an "upgrade" it never looked > to see if there was any prior product installed.
