How do I make a PNG file of text on a transparent background in PS6

I know there are a squllion web sites that seem to cover the
transparent topic but I cant find a simple step-by-step method

I want to make a line of text on a rectangular frame, save it as a PNG
file and have it appear with a transparent background in an
application that is able to work with transparent PNG's

Please can somebody guide me? Literally, what buttons and menu to
select.

This photoshop tutorial was aimed at powerpoint users....but the principle

just make sure that your text is on its own layer....delete the background
layer...(things should be transparant now)....and hit save as....png....

but note....pngs are not recommended for web work as most browsers do not
recognize them yet...but they are fine for ppt, word, director etc...
