PayPal doesn't allow people to pay for stuff with a credit card. Besides Nobody uses cards any more. Have your buyers go down to the bank and get a certified, registered, verified, guaranteed cashier's check. Then have them go to the post office and mail the check to you via certified, registered, insured express mail. Then when you get the check take it to your bank. But not your regular bank. Open a new bank account at a different bank to use just for your eBay selling. When you make deposits at that bank, make a photocopy of every check you deposit. And take a snapshot of you handing the check to the teller. That will come in handy later if the buyer (or the bank) tries to pull a fast one on you. Wait at least six weeks for the check to clear in case the buyer is trying to pull a fast one. Then when you ship the item, do the same process but sort of in reverse. First, phone your postmaster and let him/her know you have an item to ship so they can be expecting you. Tell them what the item is and that you'll be needing a box. They have several sizes of boxes at the post office. Describe the item to the postmaster and get a firm quote on how much shipping will cost. Record the conversation in case the PO tries to pull a fast one on you later. Then go to your bank, but this time to your other bank, and get a certified, registered, verified, guaranteed cashier's check for the postage amount. Take that check and the item to the post office. Ask to see the post master. Have him/her pack your item personally. They have more experience doing that than most of the window clerks. Give the cashier's check to the post master. And be careful here. Be sure they don't try and write in the words "one million" before the amount on the check. Like if the check is for "one dollar and fifty cents" they might try and make it look like "One million and one dollar(s) and fifty cents". Lots of post masters try and do that because they are mean and not gruntled. Take photos of your post master packing the item and of you handing the check to the post master. If he/she leaves the room for a moment, like to get a box, put a handful of those rubber fishing worms in his desk drawer. Then if something goes wrong a couple weeks later, you can call them, disguise your voice and say "there's a bunch of poisonous baby snakes in your desk drawer". That'll make 'em think twice next time about trying to pull a fast one. Hope that helps. Lumpy -- You were the Ken-L-Ration St Bernard? Yes. My dog's bigger. www.lumpyvoice.net

| Lumpy: >That'll make 'em think twice next time about trying >to pull a fast one. Ya forgot about taking a cashier's check to San Jose to pay eBay fees. Gotta avoid those fake eBay invoice scams. Meg is in the office to accept payments on the second Thursday of each month. Above all don't let somebody saying they are eBay take the fees from a credit card or mail a payment to them. You never know if it is really eBay or not. Better to just not pay the bill than to get scammed. | |||

Basically they do the same thing you did to establish your PayPal account. Paying with PayPal is fast, very easy (once the signup process is complete), and for the most part painless. I don't know the overall eBay numbers, but I complete hundreds of sales each month on eBay, and in my experience well over 95% of the payments are through PayPal. You'll find a sea of buyers out there with PayPal already waiting to buy your widgets. There is also a sea of sellers competing for their business. Have fun selling, and in general don't come here for advice. Witness the responses already posted.

What did I forget? "Basically they do the same thing you did to establish your PayPal account." Since it's free to send money, do you really want to give the impression that it's free to receive credit card payments?

Similar in concept to credit card companies charging a fee to merchants when they take a charge, or business bank accounts charging you a per-check fee. You can read about it, and the fees, on the PayPal site.
