| Hi -- having a dumb moment here. The FastPay service looks pretty good, overall cheaper to use than PayPal. But, and this is where I need to check, as far as I can see FastPay requires the sender (buyer) to pay a 20p fee to send the money, whereas PayPal debits a fee from the recipient (seller) and also of course when you extract money from your PayPal account. Is that right? Has anyone successfully convinced the buyer to use FastPay and didn't worry about the 20p, or could you reasonably suggest that anyone using FastPay could deduct 20p from the overall auction final price (I guess that's possible, have never tried).... TIA -- -- | |||

It doesn't seem to be taking off though - I wonder if that's because it's not really 'pushed' hard enough. I've signed up for it but have never used it as a buyer or received payment through it as a seller. By allowing a FastPay user to deduct 20 pence would be giving that user preferential treatment - almost as odious as adding a fee on for using PayPal. It's best to keep it as simple as possible - if the buyer chooses FastPay then it's their decision to do so and they would (if they have read and understood the T&C) be aware of the small charge. I think I remember reading that somewhere - I'm sure someone will put this right if I'm wrong - that offering preferential treatment based on payment method is a no-no on eBay? FastPay's advantage over NOCHEX is that it's free to load, whereas NOCHEX costs the buyer 99p each time an amount is loaded into their account. I don't imagine many people will load, say, £100 (costing them £100.99) to keep handy for auctions but I could well be wrong there. You could, I suppose, try contacting a few sellers who advertise FastPay and ask if they would mind sharing their FastPay experiences with you. I did just that a few months ago but all the replies pointed to the fact there had been little take-up on it but things may well have changed since the demise of BillPoint and the PayPal debacle. If you're going to try it then push the cost-effectiveness of it.

I hate NatWest so much that I wouldn't sign up for it even if every bidder on all of my auctions finished tonight went down on their collective knees live on webcam and pleaded in unison Feathers

Being about 6 months pregnant she had other things on her mind than to constantly check her account and every month was taken overdrawn incurring charges, which they refused to refund. As we lived near the branch she would pop in on an almost daily basis to try to resolve it, and every day was assured it would be sorted out, but of course it never was. In all the times she went to see them she was never once offered a chair, which may be a small thing to a lot of folk, but to a heavily pregnant woman at the height of a very hot summer it was a source of considerable irritation, especially to Mrs F who's got a bit of an attitude quite a lot of the time ;-) When she eventually twigged and cancelled the standing order she wrote to NatWest asking for the overpayments back (as you do) and in response received a load of threatening letters demanding court action over the non-payment of her debt which now stood at minus £600 or thereabouts. Eventually I wrote to NatWest, copying in the Chairman of NatWest and the Ombudsman and she was by return of post refunded by cheque, with a very small amount of compensation, and barely the vaguest hint of an apology. I went to close my account and move it to the Co-op, and was met with a load of misinformation, and a complete refusal to close the account which dragged on for another year until I eventually went into the branch and refused to move from the customer service desk until they agreed to shut it down. This took nearly two hours, as they claimed I had an unpresented cheque on the account, and refused to accept my insistence that as cheques were only valid for 6 months it would be academic anyway. Hopefully they have improved their customer service, but I am glad to be shot of them. The Co-op are wonderful, though Feathers

I've removed PayPal as an option, and send PayPal invoices to foreigners only. And yes, we use "FastPay costs less than a stamp" and also linked in the FastPay credit card images on our auctions so it looks a bit like the PayPal links too .... It is cheaper than the cost of a stamp to put a cheque in the post. I have also been paid with fastpay no problems at all. I like it .
