news.cis.dfn.de users - important?

I don't speak German, but this has been pointed out on uk.people.sf-fans
and I think it might be important ...

Für alle, die hier über news.cis.dfn.de lesen und posten - der Server
ist in
Kürze nur noch für "echte" DFN-Mitglieder zugänglich.. Alle anderen
können
bei unveränderten Anmeldedaten news.individal.de benutzen. Es soll wohl
noch
nicht klar sein, ob für diesen Dienst irgendwann mal Gebühren erhoben
werden - IMHO ist diese Änderung der Weg dahin.

DFN benachrichtig die User hierüber nicht einzeln.

Babelfish translates this as -

For all, over news.cis.dfn.de and posts read here - the server is
shortly only accessible for "genuine" DFN members. All different can use
news.individal.de with unchanged dates of registration. It should not be
clear probably yet whether for this service times fees are raised
sometime - IMHO is this change the way there. DFN inform those
concerning this not individually user.

And I think it means ... news.cis.dfn.de is about to be restricted to
University users, and they're not going to tell us individually! We need
to move over (looking at the website) to news.individual.net.

The German guy is speculating also that they may be positioning
themselves to charge for the service. I don't mind that if the charge is
reasonable, it's a bloody good service.

shame, I only signed up about 5 minutes ago, and the group's disappeared
from NTL's servers again

are being changed. From information in the discussion following the
announcement, it looks like current settings will continue to work for a
while but that users should change to the new ones fairly soon. The

There will be some changes within the organization of the news-service
known as "News.CIS.DFN.DE" and operated by the computer center of Freie
Universitaet Berlin, Germany.

The computer center of Freie Universitaet Berlin (ZEDAT) has taken over
the task of supplying a central news-service for member organizations
of the German National Research and Education Network (DFN). As a
result of this, the well-known name "News.CIS.DFN.DE" will be used
exclusively in connection with this new service (DFNNetNews) from now
on.

Individually registered users that do not take part in DFNNetNews will
continue to have access to the service using two new names:

- News.Individual.NET (for international users)
- News.Individual.DE (for German-speaking users)

Announcements that concern this service will be tagged with
"[Individual]" in the subject line.

The change of name concerns both the name of the news-server itself and
the URLs that point to the web-space connected with the service:

http://news.individual.net/
http://news.individual.de/

As the service provided is identical for both servers, it is neither
necessary nor possible to register for both.

Note:

Existing configurations will continue to work without the need for
modification because the technical separation of services will take
place internally on the server-side.

We do ask you to follow the new installation guides available via
http://news.individual.net/ for future setups though. Please make a
special note of the new e-mail addresses for registration:

news-register@individual.net (international users)
news-register@individual.de (German-speaking users)

Hmm, I got fedup with my news program doing the DNS lookup for
News.CIS.DFN.DE as my ISPs DNS isn't exactly rocket fast sometimes,
but I notice that currently News.CIS.DFN.DE and News.Individual.NET
share the same IP address (130.133.1.4).

I wonder which one of them will change IP addresses.

Have you tried text.ntlworld.com instead of news.ntlworld.com

It's pretty good for non binary posts, but I still prefer the German
server
