Kinda like saying "I read an ad in a newspaper and got ripped off- no
more newspaper for me" or "I found this guy listed in the Yellow Pages,
he was a crook. I'll never use the Yellow Pages again!" or "There's
this little antique shop in a strip mall and I went to pick up my table
and they'd moved. No more in-person shopping for me."

Lotsa people with "rating" in the hundreds or thousands and have yet to
get ripped off. Your 5 to 1 ratio isn't typical.

Also, don't buy from people with no feedback, and don't make purchases
that total over $100 (at least that's my approach to it!)

Even if eBay could do something, they wouldn't. I'm involved in a fraud case
to the tune of $73,000 at the very least. That's thousands of dollars from
several tens of buyers. Probably one of the biggest Internet auction scams
ever. I won't go into the details, but eBay were in an undeniable position
to prevent most of this, and they didn't. Now the buyers are up in arms and
eBay has not heard the last of it. "Buyer Protection" is a joke (that also
applies to SquareTrade, PayPal and others). In this age of political
correctness, the crooks have all the protection.

Yes indeed, do your homework and never make a big payment without escrow if
personal delivery/collection isn't possible. I didn't fall for a simple
scam. I did a lot more than check the seller's feedback. He was a very good
fraudster.
