There are tons of cases were the same item is sold at retail stores for various prices- it's up to the consumer to "shop around" if they care about price. They built a big Barnes and Nobles next to my local cd store. B&N sells cd's at list price ($17-19) and my local sells them at discount ($11-13) but people still buy at B&N, even tho' they could save $4 or so by walking 50 feet. I was looking at some teak outdoor furniture at a local shop and found a lounge for around $1700- way too much. Checked the internet and found THE SAME chair, being sold by the manufacturer for $600! And it's not unusual for retailers to sell things at a percentage off, with fine print that notes the item NEVER sold at the starting price. Certainly, tho', eBay seller do tend to exaggerate (i.e., every collectible is "rare") but if you believe 'em, it's not necessarily a scam, is it? A rip-off, deceptive, yeah. Scam implies fraud.

If it's a new item, that's usually quite easy on the internet. For old, used and collectibles, it's a bit more difficult but there's sources on the 'net for just about ANY area of collectible. (A search of eBay auctions for the same item is a good place to start.) Certainly you CAN'T trust a seller's opinion of "rarity" or "worth" if you don't know yourself. For used books, for instance, I always check this site to see what a book goes for (and prices vary WIDELY in this field) before I bid and I can often find the book, in better conditon and less money from a listed dealer- http://www.abebooks.com/ Sure, you can get ripped off on eBay, just as you can buying from a garage sale, classified ad or down at the mall. But "scam" is the wrong word, since that implies fraud and illegality. Sad to say, there's nothing illegal about selling something for way more than it's worth or it goes for elsewhere. Now, the "shipping and handling" thing, THAT'S pretty close to fraud. When they charge me $3.95 for "shipping" and throw it in a 37 cents business envelope, that sucks. Shipping should be actual cost and "handling" should be part of doing business, since ALL items, retail or mail order are "handled". Does the department store tack on EXTRA charges because they have to pay the electric bill or pay someone to unload the truck and stack the stuff on shelves?

| There are handling costs involved but I generally agree S&H on eBay is outrageous. I love when they ship from their postage meter at work. I also buy CDs so I love it when they put "OOP or OUT OF PRINT." Then they want some high price because of this. Evidently they don't use eBay cause there are 25 exact copies of that Out of Print CD selling at the same time. Like that "Amy Grant - Heart In Motion" CD. I can get that for 1.99 at ANY used CD store in Chicago. Everywhere you go there is that CD by Amy Grant. | |||

| Absolutely. Although I have to say that at this point, he's only guilty of bumping up his ratings as quick as possible. We have yet to see to what purpose he uses his ratings. Worth keeping an eye on though :o) Michael "Stanley Reynolds" <nospam_stanley_reynolds@yahoo.com> wrote in message news:8r-dnQL-P-bZGIvdRVn-vw@pghconnect.com... > > "Michael A.
