It's actually quite simple.

There are just a few things you want to do...

You need either 2 separate hard drives, or you need to cut your drive into two (partition it). You could use GParted (free software) to perform this.

Then you install Windows onto 1 drive / partition.

Then you install Linux onto the other drive / partition (I highly recommend Ubuntu for those new to Linux).

While installing Ubuntu it'll detect your Windows install and configure either Lilo or Grub (two common bootloaders) so that in the future when you boot the machine you pick which operating system you want to start.

An alternative would be to get VMWare Player (it's also free) and download some of the Virtual Appliances that are available... VMWare Player just runs on Windows (Or alternatively on Linux with Windows inside it)

And lastly there's CoLinux or Co-Operative Linux... If you don't want the Linux GUI you can run Linux and Windows side by side with CoLinux, all our Windows machines have this running.

I'd post links but I don't have them all at the moment, googling for any of the names should return it immediately, let me know if you can't find any of them, and which path you decide to take.
