| MK PitStop Member | Windows XP is too SLOW! I wondered then and there how I could improve the speed of my OS. Linux was quite out of the question - I don't even know how to use it. I was an inch close to changing back to Windows 2000, but I had an idea. Because of recent piss-offs caused by RAM problems, I've decided to End the "explorer.exe" process everytime I run my computer. To make up for it, I use Total Commander. It's almost like the old Windows 3.1 File Manager, only with a bit of thumbnail support, built-in FTP and a bunch else. It's also FAST. It's exactly what I need - conservation of RAM plus simple, straightforward file manipulation. You can also customize the menus, if you miss the start menu. Don't mind the clock - buy a wrist watch. Besides, if you really need to see the start menu, you can open up task manager via warm boot (Ctrl+Alt+Del), Run task then type "explorer.exe".The downside is that my boss gets pissed when he tries to use my computer. ![]() Kind of a weird idea, but just a thought-twister - if you ever think of changing OSes, try this first. (Google search for Total Commander, btw to find it). Last edited by Thisn2s : 06-14-2006 at 1:51 PM. | ||

| Member Level 3 | Thanks for those suggestions. I also am a modifier of my computer for it to be faster. When I was still in high school, my father bought me my first computer. Its OS was the first edition of Windows 95, it really has lots of bugs and that makes it very slow, not to mention its CPU is just a Pentium R. Its memory is the EDO ram in which you need a pair of these memories to run with only 32 mb, 16 mb each. What I did with this computer to become faster is that I made the resolution into 16 bit, high resolution only. I make sure that I always defrag it every weekend. And then made one partition of my harddisk solely to be a virtual memory. It did made my computer faster. Now I guess there are lots of software we can use to hasten the speed of the processing of our computers. But modifying the system is still fun to me. And I would like to learn more about changing the system of my computer. | ||
