Default Presario starts with F1 and F2 message

Hi all, first post here from me...
I've been given a laptop to see if I can get it going. Its a Compaq Presario V2000. On power-up I get a screen for less than a second which mentions a few keys like ESC etc, then a black screen with <F1> to resume, <F2> to setup.
Pressing F1 or F2 does nothing. Pressing ESC or F2 down while booting does nothing.
The owner also said "it sometimes wouldn't play DVDs. Sound would come and go *if* it did play the DVD. The computer has never been connected to the internet".
What should I try next? Maybe locate a USB keyboard to plug in?
Open it up and try to find a keyboard connection? Remove CMOS battery?

If I press nothing it goes to the <F1> and <F2> option screen and stays there forever. Either the keyboard has become disconnected from the motherboard, or the motherboard is faulty. That might explain why sound would come and go while playing a DVD.

I gave the laptop back and suggested they ask and/or demand satisfaction from the retailer. It is just out of the 1 yr warranty period, but we have something called the Consumer Guarantees Act (in New Zealand) which means that goods should last a reasonable amount of time.
