Hi Alex

Thank you for your quick response.

I think I shall have to do the same as you and uninstall AVG and reinstall it again. As we speak the grey flag is showing indicating I need to sign off and on again!

A question though, will I be protected whilst online downloading AVG again? I have Zone Alarm and Scotty running too, will they provide adequate protection?

Firewall: All I can say is Microsoft is another headache I am having to deal with at present. In short the licence on my copy has ran out, unbeknown to the installer that he had licenced it out on two other computers and so I am locked out of using anything Microsoft!! So in answer to your question I suppose yes, windows firewall is off. Is it safe to be left off?

I have just checked and firewall is definitely checked off.

Everythings fine now.
You do have windows firewall turned off don't you.
AVG is also best placed (as it's a spyware/malware scanner) with antivirus software. Again, I use Avast.

You'll be less protected but the AVG site is trustworthy (and firewalled and encrypted). But to put your mind at rest just run a system scan with AVG upon install.

Regarding the license, ring MS and explain the situation. They 'should' give you a new license.

Windows firewall is best left off if running AV software with it's own firewall as they can conflict.

Firstly, apologies for taking so long to reply. I somehow missed this one. Thank you for the link too. By the way do you use this operating system and if so, could you say weather it is better or worse then MS and in what way?

Hey sweetbee

I use Slackware Linux and Zenwalk which is fork of Slackware.

Well Zenwalk comes as operating system with one application for one task and it is kind of full OS and you are ready to work out-of-the box.

Now compared to Windows that is really a choice of a user. If you like linux this is a solution that offers you speed, reliability and user friendliness. I find it better than Microsoft solutions but you have to try it yourself. I do use Windows though since I have some apps that are not available for Linux but for home use computer I think linux is good enough today. Only if you are some hard-core gamer there could be a problem

Hi Beekeeper

I thank you for your response but I would like to know what problem(s) I would encounter assuming I am a hard-core gamer?

Well, I use Ashampoo WinOptimizer and Advanced Uninstaller Pro. They both do a great job in automated cleanup (registry, junk files, cookies, history, etc.) because the more free space and the less junk files, the smoother your comp runs, no ? Furthermore, defragmentation on a regular basis. And of course, uninstall programs you hardly use, get rid of them.
