One thing thats need to be done is defragment, and not by using windows in-built software.Instead use auslogics defragmenter.
It will defragment 80GB HDD within 20mins..
and ofcourse nsconfig is handy to speed up startup.

Default Speeding up computer

Hi Caogiasol

I have read your suggestions below and I have a few questions. From One what is CPU? From Two, what is BIOS? As for Four, I cannot allow updates as there is no space on my hard drive to do this. I know, you are wondering how come. Well, the short story is I have two drives, the c drive is full to capacity and the d drive is in place and in use, however, all microsoft/ windows is on my c drive and therefore, update are added there. For added information, I do not have the disc for microsoft/windows. This was a hand-me-down computer, which I have had for 3 years.

I have been trying to find out how to make my d drive my main c drive now and have not received a response as yet. Could you help? I am not conversant with computer language so should you reply could you take this into consideration. Thank you.

If you think you can help and require further information then please do not hesitate to make contact.

Regards
Sweetbee

-Three:Repair registry because registry is a heart of Windows. You can repair by TuneUP Utilities software. It is very good. You can defragment registry to speed accessing registry .It is wonderful.
-Four:Update Windows to repair the failure .Windows will run completely, wonderful

Default Speeding up computer

Hi Sherry33

These suggestion are really helpful. I have a few questions if you don't mind indulging me for a few moments.

I already do 8, 7, 4 and I think 1.

9. I checked and yeppi I followed your path and located the following:-
C: 574-574
E: (this was blank)
Drive: c:
Space available: 671MB
Custom Size
Initial size (MB) 574
Maximum size (MB) 574
O system managed size
O No paging size
Total pagin file size for all drives
Max 2MB
Recommended 574 MB
Currently allocated 575 MB

This information, I am sure, make more sense to you than it does to me. Could you explain what it is saying to you and what I need to do, if anything to improve computer speed. I am sure you will say - not much!!

Additional information, I do have a another drive (E) but as you can see it is blank (as above). It is empty, only 2.32 used space out of 127GB. I am hoping to make the E drive my main C drive but I have no idea of how to go about doing this. I have had a couple of suggestions from friends but no one as yet has come forward to actually help. My computer runs really really slow and I cannot accept updates. they fail because there is no space for them to go on!

Can you help?

Point 5. I have not scanned in over a year. I used to have Norton, which scanned every day automatically. It took up too much space and so I had to delete it. Now I have Avast. I am not sure if it scans automatically and have no idea how to check. You may have gathered by now that I am not conversant where computers are concerned, but I am learning!

Point 6. what is the prefetch folder?

Regards
Sweetbee

9. Insure your paging files is set to one and a half times the size of the amount of ram installed. If you are using 2 gig or more of ram memory simply turn off the paging file. (To review your paging file right click my computer and choose properties -then choose the advanced tab - Then select the performance settings-slect the advanced tab and modify the virtual memory file size)
8. Run monthly system maintenance such as disk cleanup, disk check, or disk defrag.
7. Clean out your temporary internet files and cookies. (To do this open Internet Explorer and choose the tools menu- Select options- on the main page you can emty the temp files and delete the cookies.)
6. Empty the c:\windows\prefetch folder.
5. Scan your system weekly for spyware.
4. Delete any unused programs by using the add/remove programs utility.
3. Groom your Windows start up file by using the msconfig utility. (This can be done by going to start\Run and typing msconfig then select ok and choose the start up tab)
2. Update your device drivers. If you are using an OEM computer simply visit the manufacturers website for updated software and drivers. If using a custom built computer you will need to visit the hardware manufacturers support site one device at a time to obtain the latest software.
1. Turn off unnecessary services in the services manager.(To access this control panel go to control panel\administrative tools\services)
This little tid bit should allow you to boost your PC performance somewhat. The major improvements will come with hardware upgrades especially increases in system memory (RAM).

Default re. to speed up computer

A great way to speed up your computer would to purchase additional fans, the more you cool your computer the faster it will be and also its a cheap way to do it as well Products is a great place to buy these fans for cheap from $2-$60. plus they have exceptional customer service.

Fairlady

Thank you for your suggestion. It is the first I have received in respect of using fans to speed up ones computer. I shall seriously consider it.

Thank you once again for taking the time to reply.

Download Crap Cleaner (freeware). Gets rid of cookies, file fragments. Extremely useful tool. Clicky

If running Norton, bin it. One, because it's crap. And two, because it runs in the background, stealing system resource. Use Avast instead, free, and I've come across no better when combined with AVG.

The only way you can be sure of removing Norton fully is to download the removal tool from the Norton site.

Keeping components cooler won't actively speed up a pc but it will keep them cooler, promoting longevity.

Default Speeding up computer

Hi Alex

Thank you for your suggestions. I used to have Norton but it took up so much disc space that it made my computer slow to a halt (before I upgraded). I changed to Avast and it was great until I forgot to update it after a year was up and found myself surfing for over 3 months without its protection. I now use AVG. However, I am thinking of changing it. When it has updates (every day) I have to sign off and on again, which spoils my fun :-( With another update I have to go to AVG's website to download it and it is always the same update, which I might add is already installed!! Strange to me but perhaps not to you? If you can help with this one then please do. Thank you.

Hi Sweetpea.

I had the same problem initially with AVG. I uninstalled and did a clean install and set it to update itself upon the system being powered up.

Everythings fine now.

You do have windows firewall turned off don't you.

AVG is also best placed (as it's a spyware/malware scanner) with antivirus software. Again, I use Avast.
