| Member Level 1 | Firstly, Hi to all, first post on here!! I have just taken delivery of a 40gb external HDD for my laptop (i have included a link to the model if it helps anyone http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/New-40GB-2-5-E... cmdZViewItem ), i use an Acer Aspire 30003lc xp sp2, My problem is that when ever I unplug (i get and audible tone) and then plug back in, the "hardware wizard" opens and says that it detects new hardware and asks me to install the Software for it? I had a drivers disk send with it, and installed what files were on it, but nothing has changed, when i emailed the sellers they said that it is plug and play and i dont need drivers for it?(so why send me a disk with drivers then?) but i had to install them to even make my laptop find the device in the first place, I have taken the drive to a friends today and plugged in into his desktop and it worked perfectly straight away, no drivers to install, as it should be, can anyone offer my any advice as to why my laptop detects it as "new hardware" everytime i plug it in, I look forward to any help or advice on offer, Cheers Froggy | ||

| Member Level 1 | I have checked as you suggested and all is as it should be, listed as automatic and started, Any other suggestion? starting to drive me mad as to why it keeps happening, i have posted to another 4 laptop/hardware forums and im not getting much help anywhere else, apart from a couple of suggestions, One was that USB devices are fickle and suggested plugging a dual USB connector in as it may not be receiving as much power, i have tried both USB's and still the same and my laptop is allways plugged in via the mains not the battery, Cheers for you advice so far, Froggy | ||

When you plug it in, go to: Start > right click my computer > properties > hardware tab > Device Manager in there you should have something with a yellow symbol on it, it should be on the Universal Serial Bus Controller or something USB Right click it and click properties, then it should say something in the device status, or even have a trouble shoot. try that then give us the out come, also if no look please give us the make of the hardware | ||

| MK PitStop Member | Try diskcheck once. I had similar problem reinstalling modem driver. Disk check solved it, it detected four errors and corrected it. If still problem persists try formating and reinstalling the OS | ||
