Default MBM shows around 30%

Hello, my cpu (XP 2600, 333Mz FSB not over clocked, MSI k7n2g motherboard)
always seems to show around 30% cpu usage. Is this normal? I have tried
Alt/Ctr/deleting most of my running programs but it doesn't make any
difference. Is this causing my cpu "idle" temp to be around 55C (Ambient
25C) ?
Thanks in advance.
Rob

If you are running XP make sure that you have file indexing and the like
shut off.

You might have a virus if you don't see anything using cpu time in task
manager.

Use "netstat" at the command line to see all your active connections...It
will help you determine if you have a trojan horse.

A trojan horse is basically something which is not what you think it is. It
doesn't necessarily mean virus, or any running task.

Email attachments that are .jpg.vbs (visual basic script, masquarading as a
jpg image) would be one form.

But thanks, I didn't know there was a netstat in Windows :-)

I know its not a virus, I never trying to imply it was. I would not
consider it a "running task", but a process running in the background. If
used maliciously then its gonna try to be unnoticeable. The one thing all
trojans are gonna have in common is a connection to their administrator.

Netstat is gonna list all your current connections in the windows
environment. If it is a trojan, which is likely, then your gonna see a
connection/port number/ip address of the alleged attacker. However if it is
a virus there may be no need for it to connect, rendering netstat entirely
useless. In which case I would suggest a combination of a good virus
scanner, related documentation pertaining to the virus in question or a
total reload of the OS.

Thanks for the replies, I have Wintop which shows idle at about 99.5%. but
MBM and another program called T-Clock shows CPU usage almost zero on boot
up but even moving the mouse ups it to around the 30% mark where it hovers.
Also downloaded a trial program called "CpuIdle" which is supposed to cool
the cpu when it is idle and this shows cpu idling at 99% but when running
this program Wintop shows cpu usage as nearly 100% !
Have done full virus scan with AVG - no viruses found.
Not sure what you mean by "Task Manager"
Running Windows ME not XP.
Spybot shows nothing.
Not sure how to execute "Netstat". Tried putting it into the run dialogue
and a black DOS screen showed up for a second and then disappeared.
All drivers in Device Manager seem ok. This is a newly built system with all
video and motherboard drivers fresh off the Motherboard CDRom.

I believe cpu idle will make it look like 100% usage but its not really...

Take a look at TCPView from sysinternals.com - it's like
a real-time netstat and it lets you close connections.
To find bad stuff, look down the remote column some time
when you aren't knowingly running anything that needs net
access. Loopback stuff to 127.0.0.1 or your IP is local and
should be okay, but investigate anything remote, especially
if it's a proccess you don't recognize.
