Default Internet Connection Sharing

OK, here's the scenario:

I've got a PIII 800MHz PC running Win98SE on the first floor of my house
with a TDK Systems Bluetooth USB dongle I bought for my phone. Downstairs,
there's a Celeron 300MHz 128Mb RAM running Win98SE connected to the internet
by a USB cable modem at 128kbps. I've been wanting to get the PIII connected
to the 'net for a while. Having considered router/switches, cabling the
house and Wi-Fi I began to think that Bluetooth might be the easiest,
cheapest option.

I know that you can share an Internet connection over Bluetooth using the
LAN access profile. My questions are:

1) Can I do this using Win98SE? I've only seen examples for Win2000/XP
2) Will it work on a 300MHz machine? Hope to upgrade soon but it surfs
fine...
3) Will I need a 100m range device? I can connect to my Nokia 7650 placed
where the Celeron is from upstairs usiong the TDK but signal strength is
pretty weak. Does this affect channel bit rate? Will the TDK (~50m range)
dongle be sufficient?

In a nutshell: "Will I be able to accomplish Internet connection sharing
with my setup by buying the cheapest USB dongle available for the Celeron
with the cable modem?"

Thanks in advance,

Matt

Win2000/XP have internal routing in their networking protocols. Win9x
doesn't have this, so it won't know where/how to route the internet
packets to. You can get software to do the routing bit:

eg Winroute lite - http://www.kerio.com/us/wrl_home.html

Don't see why not.

You are better off getting the more powerful one - there should be less
risk of signal loss, which may slow data trabsfer rate.

I am running ICS on my Win 98/SE machine ( a P60!!!!!) and it does just fine
for my network of 5 machines and 2 printers. So yes, you can do it with Win
98/SE, but doubtless Win2000/XP would be more stable - I have to bounce
about once a week after Win 98/SE gives up. But it does work........

But are you using Bluetooth through the ICS connection ??

See page 16 of this manual (from Gigabyte):

http://tinyurl.com/bl5i

LAP Server Setup (Windows 98SE and Windows Me)

Internet Protocol routing software (e.g., WinRoute Lite) is required on
Windows98SE and Windows Me servers.

Can't see why it should be any different for other adapters, unless
routing software is supplied with the package.

Hmmmm, well, I've read the manual and have to conclude that it is in error
in this regard Winroute lite - or similar - is required for Win98 first
edition, IIRC. Don't know about ME - although the link in the article below
mentions it. For Win98 SE it works out of the box. You may have to
install the Windows 98 SE support for it which is on the Windows 98 SE CD -
if it is not already loaded and you do have to configure it:

Jeremy.

What you say about ICS is correct - first came out with Win98SE, but it
is the working of a Bluetooth connection through it to access the
internet that is the problem.
