Nobody can give you a meaningfull answer, without at
least knowing what you THINK you want to do with it,
which may well change once you learn more, or even
after you buy one.

That presumes you decide to buy a 'mapping' GPS receiver, and the
specifics depend on the GPS manufacturer in terms of how you
load maps, but you'll have to buy them from the GPS manufacturer,
or one of their dealers.
You may decide to get a non-mapping GPS, and use it with PC/PDA-based
mappiong software, which will broaden your choice of maps a lot.
