I could see myself traveling and walking somewhere.... downtown Chicago or something.... and wanting a GPS unit for that as well. So are you saying that it best to have TWO units then? One for car and one for personal travel such as walking or biking?

I won't speak for the original poster, but I personally would answer "yes". I have an SPIII -- and *love* it. But I would never go hiking or walking with it. It's heavy and too bulky for walking, and the batteries only last two or so hours. In fact, Garmin so much as acknowledges this -- the SPIII's recently announced successor (due to be out this month) -- doesn't even have batteries *at all*. Get yourself a Pocket PC-based GPS system, or a Garmin Ique, or a Magellan Sporttrak, etc., etc. for your walking GPS needs. -- da ~~ "OE Quotefix" http://flash.to/oe-quotefix to fix Outlook Express' broken quoting.

| 1. Terrible battery life [on dimmed setting] 2. Reception power is not as good as my III pilot before [Magellan is very good for outdoor purpose IMO] 3. Too bulky It turned out bad, as I need to find a clear ground for it to properly receive GPS signal and I can't find one =bob= <john63401@yahoo.com> wrote in message news:9fu4jv8ob8sgloeu943e1cfs258hdrn5fa@4ax.com... > >I did have the same crazy idea too before .. Sounds like TWO diff GPS units are definitely needed then.... one designed for driving....and one for non driving uses. On the SPIII replacemnet....would you rather have the newer version? Or keep the older Street Pilot III? | |||

| I wouldn't consider the SP3 a hand held unit. I'd suggest having a look at the iQue 3600. -- Darrel Goheen GPS@tvnav.com http://www.tvnav.com <john63401@yahoo.com> wrote in message news:flo4jv8pjddq81a8d3m8lfqe88i5gbk68j@4ax.com... > If I bought a Street Pilot III..... and wanted to use > it outside my car.... such as in a pack or suitcase > while traveling.... walking or hiking.... can it be > used in that fashion as well? | |||

Sorry Darrel but I have an iPaq and I really don't think Pocket PC/Palms are robust enough for hiking. I also have a GPS V which is worth considering altho you will need to mount it close in the car due to the small screen.

Each has been better for me than > the one before. Keep them coming Garmin! Same here, I have III+, Street Pilot (older model), and now Street Pilot III Deluxe. I too like each newer model better than older, but still not 100% happy with the Street Pilot III Deluxe yet. The Voice Prompt feature is quite nice, Auto-Route is pretty nice, Color is super. But the problem that Street Pilot III Deluxe doesn't give good route, and have problem with home address. I haven't used it outside state yet, but still playing with it at local to learn more about it. And these are what I have noticed. On 65 M/H hway (interstate in downtown) I select FAST and it keeps routing to 35-45 M/H street, and resident street with lot of traffic. -------------35m/h residental st -----------------------------------| .... | <my house> .... | | CAR>==42st========60st==========72st===========84s t========== 65 m/h interstate hw It should use 65 m/h interstate hiway which is MUCH faster and about same distance or may even little shorter, but it keeps bugging me to turn left on a 2-3 miles freeway to use 25-35 m/h residental street with lot of traffic. Last week, I picked someone up at airport. From home to airport it pointed one way, when returned home (right at where I picked my friend) it pointed to different way instead of the opposite of the way I just came from (from the same street).

I assumed the original poster was talking about walking around a city or casual hiking. I would not recommend the iQue to a serious hiker either. -- Darrel Goheen GPS@tvnav.com http://www.tvnav.com
