Default Base map on Garmin GPS 3+

You can turn off the basemap, but it sounds like your real question is
whether you can load a new French basemap. The closest thing would be to
load the appropriate sections of the WorldMap, but this is getting rather
dated. It would still be much better than no map at all and would cover a
much larger area in the III+ limited (1.4 MB) memory than the more detailed
maps like Roads & Rec - Europe.

Is the WorldMap still obtainable? Like you say, it would be better than no
map ;o)

Yes, WorldMap is still a current Garmin product. It retails for about $80
in the US.
