| The prices have been reduced on the eTrex Summit, Legend, Vista and StreetPilot III. Our price on the Summit is $190.00 and the StreetPilot III is now $700.00. -- Darrel Goheen GPS@tvnav.com http://www.tvnav.com | |||

And do you have any thoughts on whether a built-in compass is something I ought to be looking for (or should I just break out my old Silva compass?)? - Andrew Langer Any posts by Andrew Langer are his own, written by him, for his own enjoyment (and the education of others). That would depend on several things such as how much you want to spend, do you want maps and map loading capability and do you intend to use it for other things such as car travel? Please call us and we would be happy to help you decide. > And do you have any thoughts on whether a built-in compass is something I ought > to be looking for (or should I just break out my old Silva compass?)? For geocaching I think an electronic compass could be helpful but not required. -- Darrel Goheen GPS@tvnav.com http://www.tvnav.com | |||

Two brands with many appropriate models are Garmin and Magellan (www.garmin.com and www.magellangps.com respectively. I would suggest one that can interface with a PC (almost all on the market now). Nice to be able to back up your data, and load points from your PC. WAAS can improve accuracy a bit, from within 10 meters 95% of the time to within 3 meters 95% of the time. The electronic compass will add significantly to the price, and reduce battery life. It will not be more precise than about 2 degrees. You would need to carry a real compass (I'm not biased ;-)) as backup anyway, as batteries can die, and a midrange one can get you to 1 degree or even 1/2 degree. gpsinformation.net is a good resource, and will link you to many others. | Darrel, Anything you hearing about on the "radar" screen to replace the GPS V yet? Something with, say a SD card? If, for example, you configure it to switch on atuomatically only when speed is less than 0 kph (in practice this seems to be about 0,4 kph in my eTrex Summit) for more than 3 mins, and you switch the unit off when taking a long stop, it won't have much effect on battery life. If you only switch it on manually when you want it (one keypress), and keep it mostly off when you don't, it uses even less :-) The only way the compass eats batteries is when you leave it on all the time, which is as silly as leaving a torch switched on when you don't need it. That eats batteries too :-) No disagreement that it is possible to minimize the battery usage, but the extra steps could mean it doesn't happen. If your flashlight is out, and you see it on when not needed, you can turn it off. But some have a bad design, and the switch turns on inside your pack and runs down the batteries without you seeing a thing. With the GPS electronic compass, it is less obvious when it is on. Also, for some uses, the compass may be needed much more of the time.
