| Ok hi all, a couple of questions and bear with me it is XBOX related in the end. I have a small network, 2 pc's and my xbox connected to BTOPENWORLD broadband, I used to use AOL before I got broadband and really liked it but couldnt get broadband for aol in my area at the time so switched, now although I have no real complaints about the bt option I was wondering does anyone in this group have AOL broadband and whats it like. Now to THE most important question, does XBOX LIVE work on aol broadband. Any info on any of this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance Kev dorkstar@btopenworld.com on XBOX LIVE gamer tag = THE SCOOBIES profile = DORKSTAR on XBCONNECT - DORKSTAR | |||

AFAIK, AOL requires users to access the internet via its gateway and advertising. That's enforced with software which the user is required to run to obtain access. That needs a PC to run on. An Xbox doesn't run AOL's software and is therefore denied access. This restriction would seem to rule out other non-PC devices too. -- Richard Boyce Email address is munged

We connected the Ethernet port to the xbox with a crossover cable and then connected to aol as normal. on the network page (start, control panel, networks) we added a simple lan area network (which may already have installed itself when you connect the NIC card.) Once this has been enabled you should notice (this is on xp i believe) a virtual network has been created by aol. If you right click on this and select properties then on the network tab you can select share this internet connection with other members. It should run through the network card allowing xbox live to detect the internet connection. It also prevents the setup from not finding the dsl address for AOL. He has been using live for a few weeks now and is very pleased with it. Also here http://www.dslreports.com/sitesearch if you type xbox live + aol it should give posts on how to get AOL working with Xbox live

Looking further afield, it seems that a direct connection can also be configured. Why on earth do AOL and MS both claim mutual incompatibility? Is this politics taking priority over customer service? -- Richard Boyce Email address is munged
