did they deny there would be a Halo2?

When Bungie first saw the success of Halo, were they coy about telling us
there would be a Halo2? How long did they wait before they decided there
would be a Halo2, and tell the public? The reason I ask is because this is
in utter contrast to Bungie's as yet reluctance to say yes or no to a Halo
3. I just don't get their attitude. So far I've only ever seen or heard
Bungie say there will never be a Halo3...why would they be so conspiratorial
when it came to Halo3 and deny all knowledge? Seems more sinister and
manipulative than anything else, and as a consumer I hate being manipulated,
tho I suppose that's what defines a consumer.

Only thing I've read is that no one really wanted to think about working on
the next game. Not too surprising on a project that size. I know that when
I was working for a large software company in Redmond, I didn't really want
to think about my job after finishing a multi-year project. I would guess
that most of the Bungie employees have been taking a lot of vacation as of
late. They certainly deserve it.

They never said there wouldn't be a Halo 2, but they did wait quite some
time before announcing it. Bungie has never said there won't be a Halo 3,
but they haven't announced it yet, and they did say that they're not
developing it yet, which they never said about Halo 2. I think it'll be
three years at the least before Halo 3 will be out, but I have no doubt it
will come.
